In August of 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th amendment, giving women the right to vote. 75 years later, on the anniversary, a theatrical production was mounted to commemorate the momentous event.
Now, 100 years later, the same team that produced the musical is back to produce an updated version that will be told through a new mixed-media approach.
In order to get the project off the ground, we had to capture the moving and as well as the humorous moments of the piece while explaining the issue to a potentially unaware audience - stoking enough excitement for them to back the new production. We turned to John McBride and the fabulous team at Blackbird Studios to record and film a number of songs from the show.
Covid-19 has had an impact on the dates of production, but has not diminished the need for Americans to understand the sacrifices and struggles women and people of color have endured securing the vote.
